Next Steps Fellowship

Navigating life after prison can be a mine field of challenging decisions without a path to success.

ISLAH-LA tasked INKERIJ with designing a four-day weekend retreat for recently released African American and Latino men. Partnering with Homeboy Industries, we developed a curriculum that included leadership development, conflict resolution, de-escalation strategies, and relationship building. The objective was for participants to actualize personal potential and build a support system that aids in a successful transition back into society.

LA City Council Resolution

INKERIJ and community partners spearheaded the passage of a Human Security Resolution by the LA City Council. INKERIJ CEO, Umar Hakim-Dey, joined Council members Katy Yaroslavsky and Hugo Soto-Martinez to present the resolution reaffirming Los Angeles’ commitment to the Four Freedoms: Freedom from Want, Freedom from Fear, Freedom of Expression, and Freedom of Worship.

This resolution exemplifies INKERIJ’s work to re-establish Muslim civic engagement and ensure the fundamental rights of all Angelenos are protected amidst the rise of global authoritarianism and Islamophobia.

Skid Row Brigade

The Skid Row Brigade, a collective of leaders who live on Skid Row, approached INKERIJ in October 2019 to scale its operations. Through interactive workshops and human-centered design tools, we translated the collective’s core values and expertise into new opportunities to serve Skid Row.

In March 2020, the city of LA implemented “Safe at Home” protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The Brigade’s expanded work and presence on Skid Row caught the attention of the Los Angele Mayor’s office who assigned the Brigade a 30-day project to observe and report on the condition and use of hygiene stations across Skid Row. This project generated jobs for Skid Row residents.

Empowering South LA

Joining grassroots leaders and Stop The Violence Increase the Peace Foundation, INKERIJ delivered workshop training in entrepreneurship and community organizing at South Los Angeles mosques. Targeting decades of systemic injustices, the initiative addressed mass incarceration, rising hate crimes, and their impact on African and Latino communities, empowering participants to rebuild personal and community agency.

The training focused on voter education, trauma healing, and entrepreneurship, preparing participants as street ambassadors for gang reduction and youth development. This program also created employment opportunities to foster a stronger, self-determined South LA.
