The challenges confronting today’s youth differ significantly from those faced by Baby Boomers and Gen X. In South Los Angeles, teens grapple with entrenched gang culture, early exposure to substance use, and rising unemployment. As of July 2025, the youth unemployment rate in the U.S. (ages 16–24) climbed to 10.8%, up from 9.8% the previous year. This leaves many young people, particularly those without access to resources or adult mentorship—vulnerable and unsupported life experience ~ Not all, but far too many.

Raised in a single-parent household, I know firsthand how easily Compton’s culture could have consumed me—if not for the timely presence of a mentor who changed my trajectory. INKERIJ exists to cultivate human potential, and this next effort reflects our commitment: a young person we’ve supported through steady, intentional growth…

During the 2024-25 school year, Inkerij launched its youth mentor program, aiming to empower young individuals through life skills discussions. Monthly conversations and mentoring sessions were conducted with professionals from various fields.

The initial assessment was over dinner and it was focused on identifying the needs of the youth, who expressed a desire for monthly grooming sessions. A local barber volunteered his services, and a prominent beautician offered her salon space for a 10-month period.

The mentoring process included guidance on identifying meaningful educational pathways for the new school, exploring entrepreneurship, navigating social media responsibly, fostering self-determination, and addressing a range of personal development topics.

“The Gradual Progress is key indicator of encouragement and growth”

As the new school year approached, one of the youth demonstrated significant growth by (1) scheduling his own appointment, (2) arranging his own transportation, and (3) covering the expenses independently.

We are eager to witness the continued growth and success of this initiative and the future endeavors of its participants and with your support this opportunity can grow.
